As a Christian, I can honestly say that majority of people do not understand the lost-ness of man-kind.  I have heard many state,

you just have to turn away from your life of sin and turn to God”…

This phrase sounds nice, rosy, warm, and cozy!  But I’m sorry to inform you…. it’s not possible!  As humans we love to feel in control!  To be honest, it is all God’s work and that should be reassuring to you.  This is one of the first concepts that I learned about through twitter.  Amazing, that though out my church going life & Catholic High School (don’t be scared. I escape the anti-Christ’s grasp..) I never learned the true impact of original sin/total depravity.  I prefer the term Total Depravity, because it symbols the absolute lost-ness of man.  Here a few verses from the bible that illustrate this:

 Matt 7:17-18

17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.

Psalms 51:5

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Psalms 58:3

The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies.

Genesis 6:5

The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

This are just a few that illustrate our soul being total addicted to sin and not toward God.  If it was just about “turn away & turn to”…then you must of never read Romans 3:9-18 & Eph 2:8-9

Romans 3:11; No one understands; no one seeks God.

Eph 2:8-9; For by Grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God

Please notice the “THIS IS NOT YOUR OWN DOING” and the part also “IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD”.

Once I grasped this, the cross had a whole new meaning for me.  Sure… I understood what the Cross was and what it accomplished, but it’s hard to truly appreciate the full impact of what we were saved from if you do not grasp how much of a slave to sin we are.  (Yes Saints I am talking to all of us)

One of the major errors I feel in the current church is not emphasizing the way that we are totally depraved and addicted to sin due to the flesh.  Members of church feel as if, they are saints now and want to focus on holy living.  Please realize the flesh doesn’t stop tempting just because you “decide” to follow God.  If it wasn’t for the cross and God gifting you by faith by grace, you would still be lost and not able to obtain salvation on your own accord.

I have a cousin, that truly feels that if he fast he can be empowered to do many things.  I am not doubting the power of fasting… but no work you do can force God’s hand.  He will gift to you when He desires.  Many truly feel, from false teaching that “if it tithe this much, God has to bless me this much”, “if I sacrifice this much, God will do this much”… God is sovereign and will gift as He pleases.  It is not a barter and trade system.  And no matter the sum of your works.. nothing…NOTHING you “think” you are doing for God can equal the Gift of Faith & the promise of Salvation that he has given to all that are His.  So if you are expecting a gift/blessing/money/etc because of “What you did”, jus know u have a never ending debt to create equal value for the free gift of grace/faith/salvation.  Good luck on your works equaling that.  LOOK TO THE CROSS and that is all you need!

1 Corinthians 1:20-25

22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Another great passage that I think relates is Mark 9:24

24 Immediately the father of the child cried out[a] and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
